I was recently nominated for the Liebster Award by fellow blogger, Sandy Huang, of the beautiful blog www.theapartmentcure.com. Even if you don’t live in an apartment, she’s got great design tips and tricks, so you’ll want to check her out.
What is the Liebster Award, anyway?
The Liebster Award is a blogging award given by a blogger, to other bloggers. If you receive one, you in turn nominate other bloggers as well. The concept behind the award is to reward strong bloggers, and to help create more awareness about good blogs that don’t yet have a huge following.
The word “Liebster” is of German origin, and among it’s several definitions are: sweetest, dearest, lovely, cute, pleasant, endearing, beloved.
If you receive the award, you are to answer a series of questions posed to you by the blogger who nominated you. So, here are my answers to Sandy’s questions:
What do you blog about?
I blog about topics relating to us (both women and men) taking ourselves too seriously, or trying to be too perfect, and how we sometimes forget that “keeping up with Mrs. Jones” can rob us of the opportunity to be vulnerable, wherein we really start to become our true selves, and let our real beauty shine through. Most of my posts are funny, but sometimes I get a little deep :).
What are your hobbies?
I’m a voracious reader, and I love to cook, garden and travel. I also love wine!
What’s your proudest achievement?
I’m a two-time cancer survivor, and a mother. The cancer showed me how strong I really am, and my daughter is truly a great kid.
Where do you see your blog going 5 years from now?
Hopefully it’s helped me build my platform to a point where I have landed an agent and a publisher. But more importantly, I hope that I’ll have done my part in contributing to a collective dialogue about letting go of our perfectionism and embracing our flawed loveliness.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Of all time, Seinfeld, hands down.
How do you come up with new content for your blog?
Everyday life is rich with so much content! But there are times when the well runs dry, and for those days, I always make sure that I’ve got a running list of ideas I can turn to. I also sometimes use current events or hot media topics.
List 2 of your favourite blogs
I love the Bloggess. She and I are fundamentally very opposite, but she’s so funny that I actually laugh out loud when I read her posts. Her blog is not for the easily offended, but if you’re not too stuffy, she’s one heck of a great writer.
And about as opposite as you can get, I love Jen Hatmaker. She is also really, really funny, just more conservative. She’s an author, and has her own show on HGTV (because she has terrific style as well). She’s a mother of 5, and she doesn’t pretend to be perfect. I think it’s so refreshing!
What kind of music do you listen to?
Okay, what I like is the stuff even before my time, like James Taylor and Paul Simon. But what I listen to most of the time is current day pop music because my daughter is usually in the car with me and she loves that garbage.
What advice would you give to other new bloggers?
Stick with it. It’s not a habit yet, so give yourself a writing schedule and stick to it. Don’t make any excuses. If you commit to let’s say two days a week, write the same two days each week, and don’t give yourself permission to “skip” because you’re bored, too busy, or can’t come up with something to write about…just sit down and write. Too many good blogs are abandoned because the author didn’t commit to a routine.
What’s one thing that you really want to learn?
How to become better at monetizing my blog. And painting. I would really love to paint.
Okay, now it’s my turn!
